Abraham Lake Ice Bubbles Guide

Ice bubbles trapped in the frozen surface of Abraham Lake, Alberta

Every winter, Abraham Lake — on Highway 11 near Nordegg, Alberta — puts on one of the strangest and most beautiful shows in the Rockies: thousands of white bubbles stacked in columns beneath the lake’s clear ice. The bubbles are methane gas, released by decaying plant matter on the lake bed and trapped as the surface freezes layer by layer. When the ice is clear and polished by the wind, the frozen bubble columns look like strings of white pearls suspended in glass.

When to See the Ice Bubbles

The best viewing is from mid-January to early February, when the ice is thick, clear and at its most transparent. Earlier and later in the winter the bubbles can still be found, but snow cover and thaw cycles may hide them.

Where to See Them

The best-known viewing spots along the Abraham Lake shoreline are:

  • Preacher’s Point
  • Abraham Slabs
  • Hoodoo Creek

How to See Them Safely

Lake ice is never risk-free, and conditions on Abraham Lake change with wind, temperature and currents. The safest way to experience the bubbles is on a guided ice walk with experienced local guides who check the ice daily. Our Ice Walks & Ice Bubbles page has the tour details and booking contacts (guided tours run through Pursuit Adventures). Dress for deep cold, and never venture onto the ice alone or without checking local conditions first.

An Easy Stop Between Banff and Jasper

Abraham Lake is an easy stop on a Banff–Jasper road trip: David Thompson Resort sits on Highway 11, 42 km east of Saskatchewan River Crossing — roughly the midpoint of the Icefields Parkway drive — so the ice bubbles make a natural break in the journey rather than a detour.

Where to Stay

The Z Cabins at Abraham Lake are open year-round and make the ideal winter base: a private luxury cabin for up to 6 guests, minutes from the ice, from $1,500 per night (2-night minimum). On a budget, our Winter Bunkhouse starts at $99 per night — email booking@davidthompsonresort.com to book.
