The Icefields Parkway is one of the world’s great drives — and David Thompson Resort sits almost exactly at its midpoint. The resort is on Highway 11 at Abraham Lake, 42 km east of Saskatchewan River Crossing. Banff to the Crossing is about 155 km (roughly 1 hr 45 min), and the Crossing to Jasper is about the same — so instead of rushing the whole route in a single day, split the drive and spend the night in the middle of it.
Why Stop Midway?
A midpoint stop turns a long transfer day into part of the holiday: arrive before dark, watch the light change over Abraham Lake, and start the next leg rested. You also get time for the places most parkway drivers only glimpse — Abraham Lake, historic Nordegg and the wider David Thompson Country. And there’s a value angle: comparable rooms in Banff and Jasper often cost twice as much in peak season. Compare our rates below.
What’s Here
- Abraham Lake — and in winter, its famous methane ice bubbles (best mid-January to early February).
- Nordegg — the historic mining town just down Highway 11.
- David Thompson Country — hiking, viewpoints and quiet Rocky Mountain scenery without the parkway crowds.
- A real bed for every budget — hotel rooms, cabins, The Z Cabins (open year-round), an RV and tent campground, and a winter bunkhouse. See Accommodations.
